I’ve been working with the student newspaper at the University of South Carolina Aiken since the Spring ‘08 semester. Starting in September ‘08, I am now the Art Director, a position which allows me to control the “look” of the newspaper. One of my favorite parts is making the ads, both in-house and for clients. My favorite issue was the Halloween issue, where we went all out and made the entire paper themed. At the moment we’re a black and white print only, with plans to go full color on the front page in the future. I’m really happy to be working with such a great staff of writers, photographers and editors.

This is the in-house ad we run when we don’t have a featured local band to spotlight.

Before the 2008 election, the Pacer Times staff all decided that we wanted to focus less on which candidates to choose and more on just getting students to vote. I got great feedback from these ads, with professors and students alike saying how eye-catching they were and informative without getting too complicated.

At the time I made these I was in Dr. Fowler’s Typography class, which really inspired me. When this particular ad was made, we were in the chapter covering woodcuts in the 1800’s and I really think it shows through.

Every week we make a list of three things we’re obsessing over. Any staff member at the meeting can contribute. This is the very first one we put into the paper, and it’s more or less become a regular feature of the entertainment page. They’re super fun to make!
*note: The logo displayed at the top of this entry was only used for the ‘09 spring semester. Another one was voted in by the student life office to be used for next year that more closely resembles the logo used for USCA sports.
